Former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano will not be taking over his old team, as the two sides could not come down to an agreement, per Brett McMurphy of Stadium.

An eight-year, $32 million deal was not enough to bring Schiano back to Rutgers, where he went 68-67 from 2001 until 20011, including an 11-2 2006 season that saw the Scarlet Knights finish just outside the top ten, the best finish in school history.

Schiano is currently unemployed, after resigning from his defensive coordinator role at the New England Patriots, a role he was only in for a few weeks.

Previously the defensive coordinator at Ohio State under Urban Meyer, most SEC fans will remember Schiano as the potential replacement for Butch Jones at Tennessee in 2017, when the Vols were prepared to offer him a top salary before the fan base intervened.

Ironically, Jones was also listed as a candidate for Rutgers before reportedly pulling his name out of consideration.

It remains to be seen if Greg Schiano will ever return to college coaching, but it does not look as though it will be in a return to the only program that he has ever led as a head coach.
