Gunner Rivers is following in his father’s footsteps. The son of soon-to-be NFL Hall of Famer Philip Rivers announced on Monday that he’ll play college football at NC State.
Rivers is much more than just a name, though. The Class of 2027 QB is considered to be the No. 6 quarterback in his cycle, rated a 4-star prospect by 247Sports. But because his father went to NC State, the Wolfpack were always thought to be the frontrunner for his services.
Rivers stands at 6-3 and threw for just under 3,000 yards with 44 touchdowns and 5 interceptions during his junior year with St. Michael Catholic in Alabama. His accuracy has been described as his best attribute, but he’s also considered a little more mobile than his father was during his 17-year NFL career.
With Rivers now on board, NC State’s 2027 Class is starting to look pretty good in the early stages. The Wolfpack are ranked No. 22 in the country and also hold pledges from Georgia-based safety Kamarion Johnson, as well as Raleigh-based TE and Griffin Cockerham and RB Christian Freeman.
As it currently stands, NC State has a 3% chance to win the ACC in 2026, per Kalshi. Here’s a full look at the latest odds:
