Last seeing the field in the October 10 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks, Auburn Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn commented on the status of redshirt junior cornerback Devan Barrett while addressing the media on Sunday, saying he opted-out earlier this season.

The eighth-year head coach did not provide an exact date of Barrett’s decision, simply sharing it was a “a couple of weeks ago,” and said he does not know if the cornerback will return to the Tigers in 2021.

A 247Sports Composite four-star running back prospect out of Tampa (Florida) Catholic in the 2017 class, Barrett moved to wide receiver during spring practice in 2018 and then shifted again later that year, joining the defensive backs in fall camp.

Carrying the football 14 times for 79 yards and adding 10 receptions for 33 yards and a score as a freshman, he has recorded four tackles and two passes defended since making the move to defense.

Falling to 5-4, Auburn was defeated by the No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies, 31-20, at home on December 5 and will round out their regular season on Saturday in Starkville against the Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-6) at 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
