Two days after he failed to confirm the return of Kyle Davis, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn reversed course Wednesday and claimed the talented sophomore receiver has rejoined the team. Malzahn was asked about the receiver during his appearance at the Region’s Tradition pro-am held in Birmingham.
Despite Davis’ social media indicating his return had already happened, Malzahn would not confirm that new during Monday’s SEC spring teleconference.
“We expect him to be back this summer, and we expect it to be fairly soon,” Malzahn would only say during the call.
Asked again about Davis’ status Wednesday, Malzahn changed his tune according to Tom Green of AL.com.
“Kyle Davis will be at our team meeting tonight when we got our guys coming back, and he’ll be back ready to go,” Malzahn admitted.
Davis played in all 13 games for Auburn last season as a true freshman. He made 12 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns his first season on campus. Davis was a four-star signee and rated as one of the Top 55 prospects in the nation in high school, according to his 247Sports Composite Ranking.
