A familiar face is back on The Plains to work with Gus Malzahn and Kevin Steele.
Former Auburn defensive back Joshua Holsey was observed at the Tigers 2020 Pro Day working with the coaching staff. When Malzahn later met with the media, he confirmed to reporters that Holsey has joined the coaching staff as a graduate assistant who will work with the defense.
“It was a pretty short discussion,” Malzahn told reporters, per Nathan King of Auburn Sports. “Josh was just a super player here and a super young man. He played in the NFL. It was kind of one of those deals where, when he got done (with the NFL), I kind of had him on my mind. I know Coach Steele thinks the world of him, too.
“I think it’s a really good situation for him. He’s going to be a great coach.”
Holsey was selected by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He suffered a non-football injury ahead of the team’s 2018 training camp and put on an injury list. Holsey was briefly activated and placed on Washington’s active roster in November 2018, but was waived the following day and re-signed to the team’s practice squad. The Redskins promoted him again to the active roster on Dec. 15, 2018, but placed him on injured reserve on Dec. 15, 2018. Washington waived Holsey on May 13, 2019. He then landed with the Oakland Raiders on Aug. 13, 2019, but was waived during final roster cuts ahead of the regular season.
