Along with many other teams around the SEC, Auburn held its first practice of fall camp on Friday. Coach Gus Malzahn met with the media after practice and revealed that one of his running backs is still working his way back after a post-spring procedure.

D.J. Williams, an early enrollee Lake Placid, Florida, had a procedure done on his shoulder, Malzahn told reporters. He does not expect it to be a major issue. Williams was a non-contact participant in Friday’s practice.

The nephew of former NFL running back Edgerrin James, Williams was an interesting recruiting story to follow. He had committed to Appalachian State in July of 2018, but later received offers from more prominent programs, with Auburn, Georgia and Alabama all showing interest at the start of the early signing period.

Williams figures to compete with returning AU running backs Boobee Whitlow and Kam Martin for carries this fall. At the end of spring practice, Malzahn praised all three backs.

“Boobee Whitlow and Kam Martin, those two guys had great springs. DJ Williams, the freshman, also had a very good spring,” Malzahn said in April.
