Leading up to the season, the focus of Kurt Roper’s spread offense was often quarterback Jeff Driskel. However, in the Gators’ season-opener against Eastern Michigan, it’s the running backs that have taken center stage in Roper’s offense.

Florida enters the half with a 30-point lead over the Eagles and Matt Jones, Kelvin Taylor and Brandon Powell have all recorded touchdowns for the Gators in the first half.

“When we play that many snaps, we got to play a lot of guys,” head coach Will Muschamp said at halftime. “Fortunately we have a lot of great players at that position.”

Both Taylor and Jones were able to gash the EMU defense early off some zone read plays. The Eagles’ front seven has been practically non-existent as Taylor’s 31-yard TD run and Jones 40-yard TD run went straight up the middle of the defense.

True freshman Brandon Powell showed some flash during the second quarter, recording a reception and a 12-yard rushing touchdown. Mack Brown also saw some time on the field with three carries.

Overall, Florida has gained 130 yards between the four running backs. Heading into this season, Florida fans knew the talent they had with Jones, Taylor and Brown, but the added dimension Powell brings can really open up the Gators’ run game and passing game.

The wide receivers have also been very involved today with 10 different players recording a reception in the first half. Roper has shown he wants Driskel to spread the ball around as much as possible in this offense.

Driskel has looked shaky at times, but he’s made some strong throws across the field and has generally been hitting his targets. As Driskel gets more comfortable in the new offense and with the strong running game the Gators have displayed, it appears Florida has a much more dynamic offense than in past years.

All in all, a solid first half for Roper’s debut in the Orange and Blue as the Gators lead Eastern Michigan 30-0.
