Hapless Tennessee defense facilitates program record for Kentucky QB
Are you a quarterback in need of a confidence-boosting performance?
Find the Tennessee defense.
Though Kentucky was pummeled by Tennessee, redshirt freshman quarterback Cutter Boley had a strong individual performance. With his fourth touchdown pass late in the third quarter, Boley became the first freshman quarterback in Kentucky football history to throw 4 passing scores in a single game.
Boley later tossed a fifth touchdown in the fourth quarter. Following that score, with a little over 8 minutes to play in the game, Boley was 26-for-35 passing for 330 yards and 5 scores.
Prior to Saturday’s game, Boley had thrown for more than 250 yards in a game only once. He’d thrown multiple touchdown passes in a game only 3 times. In fact, Boley only had 4 touchdown passes all season prior to Saturday.
Boley saw action in 4 games last season. He made his first career start in the regular-season finale against Louisville. In the offseason, the program added Zach Calzada from the transfer portal and Boley began the season on the bench.
He entered the starting lineup in Week 3 against Eastern Michigan after Calzada suffered a shoulder injury. After Saturday’s performance, he might have the job in perpetuity going forward.
Boley is also the first quarterback of the Mark Stoops era to throw at least 4 touchdown passes in an SEC game.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
