As the Tennessee Volunteers prepare for tonight’s game against Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway, fans may assume it’s the first time the Vols have played in the northeastern Tennessee town.
However, WBIR.com has a fascinating piece about the last time the Volunteers played in Bristol — in 1895.
The president was Grover Cleveland and the opponent was Saint Alban’s Boys School — a school that would eventually become a mental hospital.
The Vols were thoroughly embarrassed that day, losing 38-0.
Don’t worry, though, Vols fans — the university didn’t recognize football as a sport in 1895, so the embarrassing loss to what is now a mental hospital didn’t officially count.
