How did the voting for the 2020 Heisman Trophy shake out? First, for those not aware, here is how the voting works.

All 58 living Heisman winners are given a ballot, along with 870 members of the national media. Nissan also sponsors a fan vote, so in total, 929 ballots were distributed. Each voter selects 3 players, with 3 points allocated to a 1st place vote, 2 points to 2nd, and 1 point to 1st.

In the end, here are the voting results, with 1st-place votes in parentheses:

  • DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama—1,856 points (447)
  • Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson—1,187 points (222)
  • Mac Jones, QB, Alabama—1,130 points (138)
  • Kyle Trask, QB, Florida—737 points (61)
  • Najee Harris, RB, Alabama—216 points (16)

That’s nearly 50 percent of the 1st-place vote going to Smith, with just under a quarter going to Lawrence. And while it’s not the widest margin in Heisman history, but nearly 50 percent of the 1st-place vote is still a fairly significant number.

We’ll see if Smith can top it off with his 2nd national championship on Monday against Ohio State.
