Hot or Cold: Georgia secondary ice cold

Checking in on the early-season temperatures in Athens, Ga. …

HOT

Todd Gurley. Gurley continues to impress and came on strong late in Columbia after just 44 yards on 11 touches in the first half against the Gamecocks. He rushed for 133 yards on 20 carries on Saturday, and is averaging nearly 10 yards per carry through the ‘Dawgs first two games and is averaging 164.5 yards per game. He’s stayed healthy thus far and is on pace for a monster season.

WARM

The Bulldogs passing game. Hutson Mason has had two rather pedestrian performances. He’s 34-for-48 and 322 yards on the season. Mason’s completing 71 percent of his passes, but those have largely been dink-and-dunk throws. Mason’s first two throws on the Bulldogs opening drive to freshmen receivers Isaish McKenzie and Sony Michel were his longest of the game against the Gamecocks. He hasn’t done anything to hurt his team yet, but Georgia has to improve throwing the football.

COLD

Georgia’s coaching. Both offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt struggled on Saturday with their play calls. Pruitt had no answer for Brandon Wilds or Dylan Thompson as Carolina was able to move the ball at ease. Though his offense put up 35 points, Bobo drew criticism for his play calls in key moments of the game, (ahem a play-action pass on first-and-goal rather than a handoff to No. 3).

FROZEN

The Georgia defense. It was atrocious on Saturday against South Carolina. The Gamecocks amassed 447 yards of total offense and allowed just one sack. The Bulldogs got no pass rush and its mix of man and zone coverages under two deep safeties was exposed all afternoon against Thompson and the athletic stable of Carolina wideouts.
