Houston is going to do everything it can to keep Tom Herman as its head football coach.

According to a report from the Houston Chronicle, in an effort to fend off LSU, Texas, and other Power 5 loiterors, Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek offered Herman a contract extension earlier this week that includes a “seven-figure increase” in compensation.

On Thanksgiving night it was reported that Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher had passed on the LSU job and that the school was closing in on a deal to name Herman its next coach, but that he wanted to see what happened with Charlie Strong at Texas before making anything official.

Houston board of regents chairman Tilman Fertitta said Monday that his school is prepared to pay Herman whatever it takes to keep him.

Herman, 41, currently earns $3 million per season and enters today’s regular season finale against Memphis with a 22-3 record in two years as a head coach.

The silly season is upon us.
