Is this the most important matchup between Alabama and Vanderbilt of the 21st century? It certainly seems like it. Vanderbilt is off to its best start since 2008, and Alabama is fresh off a win over Georgia at Sanford Stadium. The winner of this game is in the driver’s seat for a trip to Atlanta when it’s all said and done.
In one corner you have the Commodores, who are 5-0 on the year but will face their toughest challenge to date on Saturday. Vanderbilt boasts wins over South Carolina and Utah State, and quarterback Diego Pavia is considered to be one of the best players in college football through 5 weeks.
In the other corner is the team that’s usually favored by 3 or more touchdowns in this matchup. Alabama stumbled out of the gate, falling at Florida State in Week 1, but bounced back last week with a massive win over Georgia. Ty Simpson has been calm and poised since that Week 1 loss, and Alabama looks like a different team entirely. The Tide’s margin for error is small, however; they’ll need to beat Vanderbilt today if they want a realistic shot at cracking the College Football Playoff.
