Hugh Freeze addresses possibility of making QB change after rough Week 2

Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers fell to Cal in Week 2, 21-14 after a forgettable offensive performance spearheaded by QB Payton Thorne.
Thorne was solid in Week 1 against Alabama A&M, but really struggled against the Golden Bears. He threw 4 interceptions while completing just 14 of his 27 passing attempts. In Week 1 Thorne completed 13 of his 21 passing attempts for 322 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Freeze told reporters that he has a hard time not playing the guy that has performed consistently in practice, but also acknowledged that it has to translate to the game.
Hugh Freeze on potentially changing quarterbacks from Payton Thorne: “It’s really hard for me to not play a young man that’s consistently the best performer in practice. … Having said that, you have to carry that over into the games.”

If Freeze was to make a change at quarterback moving into next week against New Mexico, Hank Brown would likely be who the Tigers turn to. Brown, a 3-star freshman QB out of Nashville, completed 3 of his 5 passing attempts during Auburn’s win in Week 1.
In reality, it’ll likely take a few more rough outings from Thorne to lose the starting job.
