Hugh Freeze might want to focus on preparations for the 2025 season, but he also fielded questions about his golf game and relationship with Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.
While at the podium for SEC Media Days on Tuesday, Freeze touched on everything from high expectations for Auburn to the pieces he likes about the roster. When it was time for the Q&A session, he could not entirely dodge the off-field banter produced by Kiffin.
At the start of July, Kiffin seemingly trolled Freeze and his regular golf outings with a post on social media. Kiffin himself addressed the matter on Monday, saying he likes coach Freeze. Overall, Kiffin said the exchange dates back to Freeze talking about Kiffin’s fishing game in the past, but Kiffin also got in a dig that Freeze’s golf game “sounds like he is doing amazing at.”
When it came time for Freeze’s response, all he had to say was that he loves and admires his counterpart in Oxford:
“I’m not on social media, but I love Lane. He makes me laugh, and I think he’s a good football coach, for sure,” said Hugh Freeze. “Loved his family for a long time… I think Lane’s done a great job. I couldn’t get away with all the social media so I admire him.”

Later, SDS’s own Connor O’Gara had the chance to ask Freeze if he was tired of defending his golf game. Freeze was quick to respond that he doesn’t feel a need to defend it, but ultimately defended it by saying it doesn’t detract from his job and ultimate goals.
“I haven’t really had to defend it. It’s something I enjoy doing, but I assure you, it does not take away from my time working to take Auburn back to the top of the college football world,” Freeze claimed.
While Freeze’s future likely hinges on how well Auburn plays on the field this fall, at least he addressed 2 of the burning topics on the minds of fans everywhere. That’s what talking season is all about!
