Hugh Freeze has a very unique tradition that he evidently plans to continue at Auburn.
The offensive line coach must change all of his clothes during a game.
It began early in his Ole Miss tenure when the Rebels were losing to a I-AA opponent, and Freeze noted that Matt Luke changed his clothes at halftime.
“We rolled up a bunch of numbers the second half,” Freeze said on Tuesday at SEC Media Days. “And from that point on, our entire 5 years together, Matt knew he had to change clothes at halftime if things weren’t going well.”
Freeze revealed the tradition when he was asked about second-half adjustments, and how other coaches have noted that Freeze is one of the best.
“I make my O-line coach change his clothes at halftime if we’re not doing well,” Freeze said. “I don’t know if that helps, but I do.”
Sounds like it’ll continue at Auburn.
“I’ll have to spring that on (O-line coach Jake Thornton),” Freeze said. “I haven’t told him that.”
As for the actual adjustments on the field, Freeze said, “Truthfully, I always hold a few things until the second half. I don’t know if that’s wise, that I think are going to be good. But I’ve instructed our staff, let’s kind of hold on that until the second half.”
