Despite securing an impressive 38-24 win over Baylor last Friday, Hugh Freeze and Auburn did experience a tough break when senior safety Champ Anthony went down with a thumb injury.

Some had concerns that the ailment would sideline Anthony for an extended period of time, but Freeze provided a cautiously positive update on the defensive back earlier Wednesday.

Per Nathan King of 247Sports, Freeze said that Anthony could return to practice in two weeks, provided the medical staff approves his participation. He also stated that there is the potential for Anthony to play with a cast on his thumb, adding “That’s the hope.”

The senior and captain out of Fort Worth, Texas has compiled 19 total tackles and four pass breakups during his time with the Tigers. He tallied two tackles and a pass breakup in the opener against Baylor.

Alongside former Colorado transfer Jahquez Robinson, Freeze & Co. expect the freshman duo of Eric Winters and Anquon Fegans to step up in Anthony’s absence. The former logged 16 snaps and 3 tackles against the Bears, while the latter got in for one snap of action.

The safety room will have a fair bit of time to settle itself before the schedule heats back up. Home dates with Ball State and South Alabama are followed by road trips to face Oklahoma and Texas A&M to begin SEC play.
