Hugh Freeze put it candidly with Jenny Dell of CBS Sports at halftime.
“I love they’re playing hard, we’re just not playing real smart sometimes,” Freeze said. “We blew a coverage there up 14-10, our crowd’s in it. That’s a big momentum (swing) if we can get into halftime 14-10. I hate we blew that coverage, but we’re running the football well. Hoping we can get a stop coming out of half, but I’m proud of our kids and coaches and love our crowd here.”
Alabama leads 17-14 at halftime.
Auburn took a lead with a 12-yard rush by Ja’Varrius Johnson who scored on a reverse with 2:24 left in the second quarter. Alabama answered with a Jermaine Burton touchdown catch that covered 68 yards. It was a punch, counter-punch game after the teams exchanged touchdowns in the first quarter as well. A Will Reichard field goal is the only difference in the game.
Alabama (10-1, 6-1 SEC) is trying to win its 4th straight in the series, while Auburn is trying to bounce back from a 31-10 upset loss at home against New Mexico State. Alabama has already secured a spot in the SEC Championship Game against No. 1 Georgia, but would be bumped from the Playoff picture with a loss on The Plains.
