Hugh Freeze is just a few weeks away from coaching in one of the biggest rivalries in college football.

It’s his first season at Auburn, so Freeze has never coached in the Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama, but being in the SEC before, he knows the significance of the great rivalry.

He hasn’t given too much thought about the rivalry yet — he’s had enough to worry about over the course of the season. But Freeze knows that when the time comes, his team and coaching staff will be fired up for the game.

“Truthfully, I haven’t been here long enough,” Freeze said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “The offseason was so hectic for me trying to recruit and then get into spring ball, it didn’t come up that much. But I’m not naive, I’ve coached in big rivalry games in the state next to here that means a lot. I can only imagine the level that this one means to the people of this state and to our alumni. So this will be my first one to experience and I’ll be excited when that time comes. We’ve got our hands full this week, but I’ve never been one, I’ve always welcomed the challenges of playing the likes of Alabama and Georgia and I think that’s something that I really enjoy. And I think our kids hopefully will take that same mentality.”

In his first year coaching in the game, Freeze is looking to give Auburn its first Iron Bowl win since 2019. Last year, Alabama cruised in the game, but this season Auburn is looking to make things more interesting.

First, Freeze and Auburn will take on New Mexico State this weekend.
