Hugh Freeze stopped by WJOX on Monday morning to share some expectations as Auburn is set to open spring practice.

The new coach covered offseason additions and points of emphasis with Cole Cubelic and Greg McElroy. Freeze was asked about the quarterbacks, TJ Finley, Robby Ashford and Holden Geriner, and said there would be a rotation for the first week, and added that everyone is on equal playing ground.

About offense installation, Freeze said, “No. 1, who can take care of the ball,” he said. “And then who is going to be the most accurate in us being efficient. … Did the ball go to the right spot? So the decision making that allows us to be efficient, who is grading out the highest at that. And then not only the decision was right, but is the execution of that decision, what level is that on? That comes down to some fundamentals at times, which, there’s no doubt our guys need some work on that. But as we’re starting to install it, we’ve gotta make sure the decision is the correct decision and who can process that at a fast pace.”

Freeze said making post-snap decisions is still very, very new for the players and he’s interested to see how they handle it.

Cubelic asked Freeze about the physical part of the roster, and the offensive line and interior of the defensive line, and Cubelic noted that Freeze has already addressed some of that.

“We’re not quite sure yet to what level we improved ourselves,” Freeze said. “I think in spring, No. 1, you’ve got to establish some physicality, both O-line and D-line, you have to run the ball and you have to stop the run. It’s hard for a head coach to ever leave a practice and feel great because one side usually does well, and the other side did not. But there has to be an effort and a physicality on those fronts to establish.”
