Hugh Freeze met with the media on Monday and spoke about a potential wrinkle in Auburn’s offense in 2024.

While returning redshirt senior Payton Thorne will be the team’s starting quarterback, Freeze mentioned the possibility of mixing in a wildcat quarterback package with new transfer addition Sam Jackson V.

Jackson previously played at TCU and California and received snaps at QB and wide receiver. In 2023, for the Golden Bears, Jackson attempted 97 passes for 556 yards and 5 TDs. The versatile Jackson also rushed for 59 yards and a TD in 5 games.

Freeze indicated on Monday that Auburn could get creative as it looks for ways to use Jackson’s skillset.

“Sam’s definitely got some tools that you can use,” Freeze said. “Some in the speed-sweep game, screen game and in the pass game. He’s even played some quarterback before. Who knows, you might see him at wildcat quarterback. But, glad we have him for sure.”

In high school, Jackson played both QB and WR at Naperville Central High School. Jackson had 50 receptions for 847 yards and 14 TD as a wide receiver in high school and threw for 1,727 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2019 as QB his junior year.

Currently, Jackson is listed as a WR on the Tigers’ depth chart. However, Freeze is clearly open to all possibilities with the dynamic transfer.

The Tigers will kick off the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31 against Alabama A&M.
