Injury update on Alabama skill players — Kenyan Drake, Chris Black and Robert Foster
Alabama’s Kenyan Drake (hamstring) and Chris Black (ankle) didn’t scrimmage Saturday while Robert Foster sprained his knee during practice.
Short on backfield depth, the last thing the Crimson Tide needs is a mash unit within the receiving core as well.
Alabama’s ongoing quarterback competition was the primary talking point for Nick Saban after the first fall scrimmage, but he did address the Crimson Tide’s overall health at the skill positions on offense as well.
Drake, Alabama’s No. 2 running behind Derrick Henry, and is expected to take on a sizable role as a receiving threat this season.
Black hurt his ankle during the first week of camp and hasn’t returned to full strength. Foster could potentially be Alabama’s No. 1 option this season, but that burden could fall on ArDarius Stewart (who’s healthy) in the early going.
Nick Saban doesn’t expect any of the lingering injuries to be serious.
“Kenyan Drake did not scrimmage because he strained his hamstring which shouldn’t be a big issue,” Saban said on Saturday. “I think Robert Foster sprained his knee toward the end of scrimmage. I can’t give you any medical information. I don’t think we have anybody else other than bumps and bruises.
“Chris Black didn’t go today, he’s still recovering from an ankle.”
Saban went on to mention Alabama’s need for healthy ‘playmakers’ and how this trio’s absence would affect the overall flow of the offense.
Officially three weeks away from the season opener, the defending SEC champs need to get healthy fast.
