Tennessee’s loss has turned into South Carolina’s gain.
As has been the case throughout Will Muschamp’s entire tenure in Columbia, Butch Jones’ failures have aided the South Carolina program and that trend looks to continue as Gamecock true freshman defensive back Jaycee Horn has been stood out among the first-year players in training camp.
Horn, the son of former NFL receiver Joe Horn, was a Tennessee commit under Jones but once the Volunteers got rid of the founder of the “Brick-by-Brick” of losses, the talented defensive back made the wise decision to play for Muschamp in Columbia.
A four-star prospect in the 2018 recruiting cycle out of Alpharetta, Ga., Horn appears to have already worked his way into the starting lineup for the Gamecocks. During his first coach’s radio show of the season, Muschamp indicated Horn would be on the field for SC’s nickel package to start his career.
“Jaycee Horn is going to be one of our top five DBs. He’ll be in our nickel package, a starter for us,” Muschamp said, according to 247Sports. “He is a really good football player, mature, has handled himself extremely well, extremely intelligent.”
With South Carolina experiencing so much turnover at defensive back this offseason, don’t be shocked if Horn works his way into a starting cornerback spot by season’s end. If he’s already cracked the nickel rotation, there’s enough evidence to suggest he’ll be the team’s lock-down corner by the time he develops by his sophomore season.
Gamecock fans may soon have another reason to say thanks, Butch.
