Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron has been named the Peach Bowl Defensive Player of the Game after he delivered the game-sealing interception in double overtime to deliver Texas to a 39-31 victory over Arizona State to send the Longhorns on to the Cotton Bowl.
It was his (and Texas’s) biggest play of the game in one of the highest stakes college football games and was also amazingly set up by a clutch drive from quarterback Quinn Ewers and the offense. In the previous possession, the Longhorns offense scored a touchdown followed by a two-point conversion to put them in prime position to win with the current overtime rules after staving off a near comeback by the Sun Devils.
Barron, who has been a force within the Texas secondary after winning the Jim Thorpe Award, finished out the game with 11 combined tackles, 7 of which were solo, also with half of a tackle for loss. He totals 50 combined tackles (35 solo), with 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery on the season. As an NFL Draft prospect to keep an eye on, he will be one to watch closely as the team continues a very strong postseason run now just one win away from a national title game appearance.
Despite the loss for Arizona State, Sun Devils standout Cam Skattebo was named the Peach Bowl offensive MVP after he rushed for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns on the Texas defense.
