Many players in the SEC have deep ties to the Houston area, which is dealing with devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.
Among those with families in the path of the storm is Alabama QB Jalen Hurts, who attended nearby Channelview High School.
The sophomore told 247Sports that he has been in touch with his family and, while the damage in the area is extensive, his house is OK for now:
“It’s a blessing for me because my house hasn’t really been damaged, my street hasn’t really had a lot of flooding,” Hurts said. “But everything around it is pretty bad. Woodforest and Beltway Eight and all that, just a lot going on.
“But my family is good and that’s a blessing.”
As for the rest of the Alabama coaches and players with ties to the Houston area, coach Nick Saban said the team has been lucky so far:
“As of right now, all of our coaches have been in touch with their families and the players,” Saban said. “If anybody is having any issues and we can be of any assistance to them, we’ve certainly let them know that we’re here to try and help in any way that we can.
“We want our players to feel comfortable that their families are not in any danger or in harm’s way. To this point, we don’t have any significant issues that we have to report.”
Alabama plays Florida State to kick off the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2. It’s good peace of mind for the players to know that their families are OK heading into that important matchup.
