Ja’Varrius Johnson entered the transfer portal on Feb. 2 after three years with Auburn football. He was in the portal about a month before returning to the roster, and is not set to embark on year four.

He detailed his decision to return Wednesday.

โ€œI’ve been here, going onto my fourth year now, and you know, the connection I had with each player on the team, so that was like the biggest thing too, for me, was just not like leaving my boys because I’ve been here for a while and made connections with them,” Johnson said, via the Opelika-Auburn News.

Johnson is set to be a major weapon for the Tigers this year after receiving his first true action last season. He caught 19 passes for 274 yards and 2 touchdowns last year.

The 5-10 receiver joins Malcolm Johnson and the only remaining 500-yard receiver on the team from last season in sixth year senior Shedrick Jackson trying to resuscitate a hapless receiver room.

And Johnson is obsessed with improving with the Tigers this season.

โ€œIโ€™ve been working a lot on becoming a better route-runner, you know, learning the defenses, learning all the coverages,โ€ Johnson said. โ€œThatโ€™s been my main thing, just learning all the coverages so that when weโ€™re playing, Iโ€™ll be able to know the coverages and know the spots and weaknesses I can attack.”
