JaVonta Payton is coming home.

The former Mississippi State receiver announced on Wednesday that he will be transferring to Tennessee.

The Nashville native played the last two seasons with the Bulldogs, making 28 catches for 372 yards and a touchdown during his time in Starkville. Payton played in 21 games during his two seasons with Mississippi State.

“I was always meant to be home,” Payton said in his commitment post.

The Nashville native and Hillsboro High School product was committed to Ole Miss at one point during his high school recruitment before enrolling at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Payton had been recruited by Jeremy Pruitt’s staff but made the decision to sign with Joe Moorhead’s Mississippi State program after a successful stint with Northwest Mississippi Community College.

After one season playing for Mike Leach, Payton made the decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal back in April.
