Jermod McCoy explains why he didn’t play in 2025 despite efforts to return

Jermod McCoy is one of the best cornerback prospects at the 2026 NFL Draft. There’s a strong chance he’s the second or even first corner selected, all despite the fact he hasn’t played football in over a year.
McCoy tore his ACL in January of 2025 during offseason workouts. He missed the start of the season for Tennessee and, despite working at it, just wasn’t able to make it back to the field for the Volunteers. According to Kalshi, McCoy’s odds to be taken in the top 10 are pretty low, as he doesn’t appear among the top 10 potential draftees. Here’s a full look at the odds:
On Thursday, McCoy spoke with reporters at the NFL Draft Combine to offer some insight into the final months of his Tennessee career, and his preparation for the NFL Draft and Draft Combine. Interestingly, McCoy mentioned that he was close to returning after working to see the field again. However, when it came down to it, McCoy insisted he just “didn’t feel ready yet.”
And ultimately, McCoy not returning was probably for the best. Tennessee football’s postseason chances ended before McCoy would have been able to return to the field to play meaningful football. The Vols finished the season 8-5. Considering he’s about to receive a massive check for being drafted in the first round, what’s the point in risking further injury if he didn’t feel ready for his assignment?
Current mock drafts have McCoy being selected around the 11-20 range. PFF, for example, predicts the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will select McCoy with the 15th overall pick.
