Jimbo Fisher comments on Johnny Manziel’s participation at Texas A&M Pro Day: ‘I think it’s wonderful’
Texas A&M’s new coach had an easy way to gain a ton of street cred in College Station with just one move — embrace the Aggies’ favorite son Johnny Manziel with open arms. Jimbo Fisher has done that and more by welcoming back the Heisman Trophy winner for Texas A&M’s Pro Day event.
Following the Aggies’ latest practice, Fisher was asked about Manziel’s highly anticipated return to College Station, something the school confirmed Monday. The former Aggie and NFL quarterback is currently working his way back to the professional ranks and will now have a chance to throw in front of representatives from all 32 NFL clubs during the event.
So why has Fisher been so eager to welcome back Manziel? Here’s what he said following Monday’s practice.
“He’s one of our guys,” Fisher said. “He won the Heisman Trophy, and what he is as a player here, and just doing a great job of his life right now, trying to get things in line. I have no problem with him coming here. Our school is great with it, and I’m great with it. I think it’s wonderful.”
How did the reunion come about? Fisher explained that, as well.
“He reached out to the school here, I guess last week some time — I believe when it was,” he said.
Following his participation in the University of San Diego’s Pro Day event last week, which was attended by over 10 NFL clubs, Manziel now has a chance to show each NFL team just how far he’s come from his low point when he was cut from Cleveland in 2015 after only two seasons of play. If Manziel makes the most out of this opportunity, there’s a good chance he’s on an NFL roster next season.
