Jimbo Fisher discusses Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense, Kyle Field advantage
After falling against Arkansas last Saturday, No. 15 Texas A&M will look to bounce back at home this weekend against Mississippi State.
But it won’t be easy for the Aggies, who will have to contend with a prolific Bulldogs passing attack, which is what you deal with when facing a Mike Leach offense.
“He can get to all parts of the field, so you have to be multiple,” said A&M coach Jimbo Fisher during Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference when asked about Leach’s Air Raid attack. “… You have to do it each and every play. … He does everything in the game and he knows how to throw the football. You have to be very diverse, very athletic, have to tackle in space.”
One look at the Mississippi State passing numbers confirms that Fisher has every right to be concerned about what Leach does as a play caller, as Bulldogs quarterback Will Rogers has thrown for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns through 4 games, while completing 75 percent of his passes.
Fisher also said Wednesday that MSU’s 2-2 record is deceiving and the Bulldogs, despite falling behind in games, could easily be 4-0.
“They’ve come back in all those games,” Fisher said. “… The urgency sometimes, the ability to compete … kids fight, scratch and claw. … They compete very hard.”
Fisher added that he’s quite happy to have the game at home with the challenges Mississippi State poses.
“First of all, it’s a beautiful setting,” said Fisher of storied Kyle Field. “Second of all, the fans are incredible. … Those are the 2 things that jump out at me. The 12th man is incredible in that regard. … It’s a very unique situation here and you’re supported by tremendous people and fans.”
