Through Week 6, Texas A&M has led the country in tackles for loss with 57 on the season. The Aggies have also racked up 26 sacks on the year.
The Aggies have asserted their defensive line’s dominance so far this season and they’re not looking to slow things down. During the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday, Jimbo Fisher explained what has allowed his team to be so successful on the defensive side.
“We have good front people, and our backers are active and they’re very fast and we blitz them, but they also read, they’re triggering getting down hill,” Fisher said. “It all starts up front, and then when your backers and fitting those gaps when they blitz, they blitz. But our guys up front, from McKinnley (Jackson) to Shemar Turner, Shemar Stewart, (Fadil) Diggs has gotten a lot of those guys, Isaiah Raikes, Walter Nolen’s been outstanding. His ability to pass rush and take on blockers and shed, and then our backers are being active with Coop and the guys. It’s just a good group and they’re playing really well together. The thing I like and I can say, they’re doing a great job in discipline of keeping guys in the pocket as they’re making those sacks.”
Aggies’ linebacker Edgerrin Cooper is leading the charge with 5 sacks on the season, which is tied for the 5th most in the nation.
Fisher and Texas A&M are looking to keep up their defensive production as they take on Tennessee this weekend. The Aggies are looking to bounce back from the loss to Alabama while the Vols are looking to keep things rolling after beating South Carolina a few weeks ago.
