Jimbo Fisher and the Texas A&M Aggies downed Alabama on a last-second field goal in 2021, 41-38.

The Aggies saw a huge performance from QB Zach Calzada in that game. He was confident and threw for just under 300 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception.

Fisher, A&M’s head coach, recalled that win on Wednesday at the SEC’s weekly teleconference, He gave some more insight into Calzada’s big day and the importance of not beating yourself as the Aggies prepare for another bout against the Crimson Tide this Saturday.

Here’s what he could recall and how it can be relevant to this week’s game and the big games on the season as a whole.

“I think he played with great consistently in the game. Alabama, anytime you play these teams, you always hear me, we’ve got to fight for inches, we’ve got to eliminate their inches, they don’t give you things. And if you give them opportunities, man they capitalize on. And that’s what I say about great teams. Most big games or any game are lost, not won. When you make a mistake, people are so consistent in what they do, they take advantage of your mistakes and that’s one of the things that he did in that game. He allowed us to stay ahead of the chains and play well and we played really well in the 1st half. Now I remember we got in a lull and he made a heck of a drive, made a couple really good plays, we made some plays around him on that drive to tie it up and then he got his knee hurt and I remember the toughness and competitiveness, he stayed in the game and competed with to allow us to get down and get the field goal on the last drive. The thing he did was play with great consistency and get the ball to playmakers he had and competed at a high level.”

Texas A&M and No. 11 Alabama battle for the last undefeated spot in the SEC West Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on CBS from Kyle Field in College Station.
