Jimbo Fisher on if Texas A&M must beat LSU to show progress of his Aggie program
Texas A&M appears to be a different program under Jimbo Fisher, having avoided another November collapse that had cursed the program in year’s past. However, there is still another hurdle or two left before the Aggies are taken as a serious threat in the SEC West, including winning — not just competing in — big games and taking down LSU.
If the Aggies are going to get the job done, they will likely have to do so by running the ball and defending the run, two things that have been glaring weaknesses in their annual matchups with the Tigers since joining the SEC but aspects of the program that appear to be strengths under Fisher.
During Fisher’s Monday press conference leading up to the LSU game, the Aggie coach was asked if his team had to win this game, in order to show that progress was being made in College Station.
“I think any win you have you show proof of progress but at the same time, you can win and not do it the right way and not really make progress,” Fisher answered. “Like I say, you build it on a false foundation. I think we’ve made tremendous progress as I look back at what we are doing, how we are doing it, the way we are in games but you definitely have to start eventually winning those games. This is important for us and I’m anxious to see us go out and compete.”
The Aggies are 7-4 on the season, 4-3 in SEC play entering the game, while LSU is 9-2 overall, 5-2 in league play entering the regular season finale in College Station.
