Texas A&M hauled in a top 10 recruiting class during the 2020 recruiting cycle and while it would be great to have those players come in and develop at their own pace, Jimbo Fisher’s program may not have that luxury given all the uncertainty heading into the upcoming season.

During his Thursday media availability, the Texas A&M coach was asked to share his thoughts on the new faces in College Station going through their first camp in college.

“So far, I mean, listen, I’m gonna say this, we’re very happy we have these guys,” Fisher said. “I think some of these guys will be able to help us with depth and things are going forward. And we’re very pleased with all the guys who recruited our staff and everybody did a great job of evaluating and I feel like we got the right guys, that’s for sure.”

When it comes specifically to the freshmen on the offensive line in College Station, Fisher believes many of those players may have to play this fall, despite the position being more of a developmental one.

That means four-star signees Chris Morris and Akinola Ogunbiyi and three-star prospect Josh Bankhead, Smart Chibuzo and Jordan Jefferson have to be developing at a rapid pace during camp.

“I think you see the ability. These guys there are (there) physically… now it’s just a matter of getting the reps getting the time getting all the things going off into the offensive line,” Fisher continued. “I don’t know, and I say it all the time – I take it for granted, how tough it is to come in as an offensive lineman as a freshman? The multitude of things you see.

“Not only, alright, the guy across from you is bigger, stronger and faster than anybody I’ve ever seen, and then the twist and the stunts and the different looks that go on defense and everything that goes on.”

The offensive line was an issue that held this program back last fall and with the uncertainty surrounding the season, Fisher stressed how important these players could be for the team in the weeks and months to come.

“But you know we feel we’re developing and those guys are going to have to be ready,” Fisher added. “You have to get those guys ready to play this year because of — you don’t know the uncertainty of different things that can happen during the year, you know what I’m saying? We’ve been pleased with their progress, we are anxious to watch them scrimmage.”
