Joe Milton and the Tennessee Volunteers open the 2021 college football season Thursday night against Bowling Green.

On Monday, first-year head coach Josh Heupel named the Michigan transfer Milton the starting quarterback ahead of the season opener. He cited Milton’s decision-making and skills as to why he won the starting job.

Milton transferred to Tennessee in April from the University of Michigan, and he beat out backups Hendon Hooker (Virginia Tech transfer), Harrison Bailey and former Vols signal caller Brian Maurer.

Although Milton is gifted athletically, his physique will remind one of a defensive end. He’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 244 pounds, and he’s a load to bring down.

While at Michigan, Milton threw for 1,194 yards, 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He also added 156 yards rushing. Exiting high school, Milton was ranked as the nation’s No. 9 pro-style quarterback and the state of Florida’s No. 35 overall prospect, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Milton has plenty enough arm strength to be a really good passer, and his sneaky-good athleticism will allow him to be effective in the running game, too.

Check out Milton’s 2020 season highlights while he was at Michigan.

Milton and the Vols kick off against Bowling Green Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
