Coming off an upset loss at Florida, the Red River Rivalry is shaping up to be even more significant for Texas. So much so that FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt believes it’s make or break for the Longhorns’ season.
During a recent edition of the Joel Klatt Show, the analyst paints a bleak picture for Texas if it falls to rival Oklahoma in Week 7.
“From a Texas perspective, this one is obvious. This one is a must-win for them in Red River. From preseason No. 1, if they lose this game, they’ll be out of the Playoff picture,” Klatt said. “I don’t think they have enough left on their schedule to get themselves back to Atlanta or even back in the mix.”
Klatt doesn’t envision the Longhorns digging themselves out of the hole and into the College Football Playoff if they lose a third game.
“As we know, 9-3 is likely not going to cut it. … When we get down to it, and it’s a bottom-line business, do we really think 9-3 is going to get into the College Football Playoff?” Klatt said. “I doubt it.”
Missing the CFP would be a massive underachievement for a Texas squad that entered with national championship expectations. We’ll see how the Longhorns respond on Saturday in the crucial matchup.
Texas vs. No. 6 Oklahoma is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
