Joey Aguilar breaks Heupel-era Tennessee record in win over Mississippi State

Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar has torched opposing defenses this season. The Appalachian State-turned-UCLA transfer posted 356 total yards in the Vols’ 41-34 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday. In the process, he rewrote Tennessee’s record book.

Aguilar racked up 335 passing yards against the Bulldogs in Week 5. That tally is the new record for passing yards in a road game under Josh Heupel.

Hendon Hooker held the mark previously with 325 yards at Pittsburgh (Sept. 10, 2022).

Aguilar joins Hooker (twice) as the only Tennessee quarterbacks to throw for 300-plus passing yards on the road in Josh Heupel’s tenure. His accomplishment is even more impressive when you consider this was his first SEC road start.

Aguilar was far from perfect on Saturday — he threw 2 interceptions for the second time in 3 games — but was absolute nails when it mattered most. He completed all 6 of his passes and scrambled for the game-tying score late in regulation against the Bulldogs. Without his composure with the game on the line, Tennessee probably doesn’t escape Starkville victorious.

The Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) get to rest up next week before hosting Arkansas on Oct. 11. Both the kickoff time and TV channel for that contest have yet to be determined.
