Joey Chestnut has emerged victorious at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest once again.

Chestnut won his 16th title on Tuesday afternoon despite a brief period of time where it appeared the contest would be canceled due to inclement weather.

Instead, more than a dozen of the world’s best hot dog eaters emerged at just after 2 p.m. ET on Independence Day.

The result was an 8th straight championship for Chestnut, who added to his title as the winningest eater in the history of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Chestnut ate 62 hotdogs en route to victory, pending official results. 2nd place came in at 48 hot dogs.

Here’s video of his performance:

There aren’t many details about how the contest was canceled — and then uncanceled — but Chestnut appears to have had an impact.

According to Kenneth Heasley, Chestnut emphatically said the contest would go on as planned shortly after 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Less than an hour later, contestants were being introduced on ESPN 2.

The first Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest took place in 1967.
