Cason Wallace absolutely has a chance to be one of the best freshmen in the SEC this season. At least, that’s if his opening performance is to be an indicator.

Wallace was incredible in Kentucky’s smacking of Howard on opening night. The freshman very nearly had a triple-double, scoring 15 points with 9 assists and 8 rebounds. Calipari raved about his performance postgame, comparing him to the rest of the top guards he has coached.

“He’s a guard is what he is. And the best players I’ve had have been guards. They can play on the ball, they can play off the ball. But they’re tough as nails. He is tough,” Calipari said, via Hunter Shelton of SI. “If you remember, Jamal Murray used to make me smile. He would go, Smile. This kid walks in, Where’s your energy, coach? Energy. And so he’s fun to be around. He’s a competitor. It’s kind of like Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) where he says, I trust you. Tell me how you want me to play. I trust you. And he’s special.”

Wallace and Kentucky are back in action Friday against Duquesne.
