John Mateer goes viral for alleged ‘sports gambling’ Venmo transactions
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is in the news for an unfortunate reason this week.
Late Monday evening, screenshots from a Venmo account that appears to belong to Mateer surfaced on social media. The images show Mateer made 2 payments to someone back in November of 2022 with “sports gambling” in the memo line.
Here’s a look at the images:
Shortly after the images surfaced, the account’s transaction history was deleted.
While Mateer has yet to confirm the account belongs to him, Sooner Scoop’s Geoerge Stoia reported on Tuesday morning that Oklahoma is aware of the matter. Stoia’s report says Mateer has assured Oklahoma he has “never gambled.”
Betting on college football games is, of course, against NCAA rules for student-athletes. If Mateer was confirmed to have bet on other college football games while at Washington State, he could face a suspension or other punishments. However, at this time it’s unclear if the NCAA will launch an official investigation into this matter.
If Mateer is sidelined for any length of time this season, it would put Oklahoma’s season in jeopardy. He arrived in Norman as perhaps the best quarterback transfer of this past offseason and is expected to be one of the SEC’s top passers in 2025.
Here’s some of the best social media reaction to this saga:
