Nate Oats just landed the first commitment of his tenure at Alabama.

No, it didn’t come from a coveted high school prospect or a graduate transfer from his previous job at Buffalo, Alabama’s new coach has reportedly convinced John Petty to stay in Tuscaloosa and play for him next season. Jeff Goodman of Stadium was the first to report the news.

The sophomore Petty averaged 10.2 points per game for the Crimson Tide last season and decided to explore his options elsewhere by entering his name in the NCAA transfer portal following Avery Johnson’s departure from Alabama. With Petty reportedly deciding to return to Alabama, the Crimson Tide are down to three players in the NCAA transfer portal — Kira Lewis, Daniel Giddens and Dazon Ingram.

Oats was hired this week by Alabama after leading Buffalo to the NCAA Tournament three times in his four seasons at the school. Oats has not only reached the postseason but he has led his team to a win in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments. He had a 97-43 overall record with the program.
