Reports: Raiders 1st-round pick, ex-MSU star Johnathan Abram may miss rest of rookie season

Former Mississippi State defensive back Johnathan Abram made five tackles in his rookie debut for the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders beat the Denver Broncos 24-16 Monday night, but the game could potentially be very costly for Abram.

The first-round pick injured his shoulder, and there is a possibility of surgery and being placed on injured reserve, according to multiple reports.

Bleacher Report’s Adam Lefkoe reported that Abram tore both his Rotator Cuff and his Labrum in the first quarter, while ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported that Abram will seek a second opinion of his shoulder and could be placed on injured reserve.

Lefkoe shared the following replay on his Twitter feed as the play in which Abram was injured.

Abram plays as violent as anyone in the game. He shared a photo of his bent facemask following his Raiders’ debut.

Jon Gruden spoke Tuesday prior to the news about Abram’s shoulder saying the rookie could play less reckless.

“I think he probably got a little bit too reckless at times,” Gruden said. “Made some great plays, some impact plays and certainly I think some tackles he’s got to make for us, he missed. But his debut was pretty good.”

The Raiders selected Abram with the No. 27 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.
