Jon Sumrall hiring Tulane special teams coordinator to same position on Florida staff, per report
Jon Sumrall is on the verge of bringing Tulane special teams coordinator Johnathan Galante with him to Gainesville to take the same position at Florida, according to a CBS Sports report on Sunday afternoon.
With Tulane’s season ending after Saturday’s loss to Ole Miss in the first round of the College Football Playoff, it’s now time for Sumrall to fully focus on the 2026 season and putting together his first staff in Gainesville.
It appears that Jon Sumrall took 2 steps toward completing that staff on Sunday with very familiar faces, with this reported hire of Galante and also with On3’s report that Sumrall has hired Tulane run game coordinator and offensive line coach Evan McKissack to be Florida’s new tight ends coach.
Galante would be a top-notch hire for Sumrall, who knows all too well about what he brings to the table, having worked with Galante at Tulane. Galante was a nominee this season for the prestigious Broyles Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.
Before Galante arrived at Tulane, he was the special teams coordinator at Marshall. Galante also has experience in the SEC, having been an analyst at Alabama as well as at Virginia Tech.
Now, it appears Galante will be heading back to the SEC for the 2026 season to reunite with a very familiar head coach in Sumrall who he enjoyed success with at Tulane.
