Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers got off to a 1-0 start Thursday night in the 59-10 win over Ball State.

Quarterback Hendon Hooker combined for 4 touchdowns on the night, and the Vols offense rolled up 570 total yards of offense.

Following the game, Heupel spoke with the SEC Network on the win.

On playing a lot of players against Ball State …

“Yeah, a lot of young guys on both sides of the ball, particularly on defense, got an opportunity to go out and play and compete. I actually thought our young guys there, late third and early fourth, did a really nice job defensively. There’s a lot of good and some things we gotta clean up. But I’m excited to get a win and start this way.”

On Hendon Hooker’s big night …

“In control. Smart. Decisive in the running game and in the throwing game. I thought he was in complete command of everything. One throw over the middle that he missed, but other than that, really accurate with the football.”

On how Tennessee can improve …

“The biggest thing to me is coming out and playing with great effort. If you play harder than your opponent, more times than not, you’re going to win. We were able to create some turnovers and take care of the ball for the most part. Real sloppy at the end. I thought the end of the first half wasn’t clean. End of the ball game wasn’t as clean as we want to be. If we’re going to be a good football team, you have to be smart in those moments, too.”
