Josh Heupel and Tennessee have another big test this week after dropping last week’s game to Missouri in blowout fashion.
The Vols are preparing to take on a the top team in the country, looking for an upset win to spark some life before the end of the season. Tennessee hosts Georgia this week in what will likely be the most difficult game of the season.
Heupel recognizes the challenge at hand, praising Georgia’s production so far this year.
“I think their ability to operate to really effectively and efficiently in everything that they’re doing offensively is a huge part of it,” Heupel said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “The numbers are right, they’ve got the ability to run the football. But they are explosive on the outside, the quarterback’s been extremely accurate with the football.”
Heupel believes on thing that has made Georgia so good this season is its ability to get better over the course of the season. The Bulldogs had a new quarterback in Carson Beck this season, and they have grown around him as the season has gone on.
“First-time starter for them at quarterback and that typically means that those guys continue to grow throughout the course of the season and he certainly has,” Heupel said. “I think the fact that they’re getting close to being 100% with their skill players too has allowed them to continue to grow offensively as well with the pieces around them. They’re a really good football team. They were good at the beginning of the year and they continued to get better throughout the course of the season, that’s what good teams do and they certainly represent that.”
Georgia is coming off a dominant win over Ole Miss and looking to keep its foot on the gas as it heads to Knoxville. The Bulldogs have already locked in a spot in the SEC Championship, but they need to avoid any slip ups to maintain their spot at No. 1 in the CFP rankings.
The Vols aren’t playing for much in this game after picking up their 3rd loss of the season, but beating Georgia is one of the few milestones Heupel has yet to accomplish in his time at Tennessee, so a win would be huge for the Vols.
Tennessee and Georgia kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
