Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel gave an encouraging update on the Vols’ wide receiver unit on Tuesday afternoon.
On Tuesday, Heupel said three of the team’s best route runners — Mike Matthews, Chris Brazzell and Braylon Staley — were all back on the practice field after battling minor injuries during camp.
With only seven scholarship receivers on the roster, depth remains a concern heading into the season opener against Syracuse on August 30.
Matthews, a former 5-star recruit, provides flexibility by being able to play both outside receiver and slot positions, which could help cover for Staley if he misses any time.

Brazzell is the most experienced of the group. A former Tulane transfer, Brazzell caught 29 passes for 333 yards and 2 touchdowns last year in his first season with the Vols. Tennessee is hopeful he’ll make another step forward this season.
With practice ramping up and the opener approaching, all eyes will be on Tennessee’s weapons in the passing attack, and whether or not the mix of experience can translate into success under Heupel.
