Josh Heupel linked to Penn State coaching vacancy, per prediction markets
Tennessee coach Josh Heupel could be a candidate for the Penn State head coaching job.
After the SEC’s flurry of hires on Sunday, Penn State has arguably the best remaining coaching vacancy of any team in the country. The Nittany Lions are looking for a full-time replacement after firing James Franklin earlier this season.
While there haven’t been any concrete reports linking Heupel to Happy Valley, prediction markets such as Kalshi have the Vols’ head coach as one of the top candidates for the job.
As of publication, Heupel is priced at 18 cents per contract to be the next head coach at Penn State. Contracts on correct predictions pay out at a rate of $1 per contract, meaning Heupel is roughly 5-to-1 to get the Penn State job according to the latest market prices on Kalshi.
Of course, those markets are volatile and subject to change. Former Alabama offensive coordinator and ex-New York Giants coach Brian Daboll is currently a leading candidate, as is BYU coach Kalani Sitake.

Heupel has been at Tennessee since 2021 and has helped the Vols to their best extended period of success since the Phillip Fulmer era. Tennessee won just 8 games in 2025, but the Vols won an average of 10 games per year from 2022-24.
There is no known timetable for Penn State to make a final decision on its next head coach.
