Tennessee will meet Pittsburgh this week in a game billed as the “Johnny Majors Classic” because of the legendary coach’s involvement and contributions to both programs in a meaningful way.
“It’s unique that Coach Majors had such a huge impact on both programs as a player, as a coach, that’s part of the foundation of who we are,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said at his Monday press conference. “His legacy lives on at Tennessee, he’s part of the foundation of who we are, a cornerstone of it. I think it’s a fitting opportunity to pay tribute to him from both programs. It’s unique that you have a coach that is that instrumental in 2 different programs, very few opportunities to promote that with both teams playing.”
This week is the first meeting between the two teams since 1983, and Tennessee will celebrate Majors’ legacy with in-game festivities. The programs will reciprocate the event on Sept. 10, 2022, when they meet at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
