Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton has been highly touted since before the beginning of the 2023 season and that’s something that has continued through the year into the season.

Milton most recently took the field in the Volunteers’ 41-20 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Vols ran the ball well against South Carolina and Milton wasn’t asked to do much, but he has certainly looked better this season. That’s slightly concerning coming against a South Carolina secondary that was torched by Mississippi State in Week 4.

Head coach Josh Heupel weighed in with his evaluation of Milton’s performance after he completed 21-of-32 passes for 239 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

“He has missed a couple of throws over the middle,” Heupel said Monday at the Knoxville Quarterback Club. “Some of that can be fundamentals. Some of it can be somebody in his lap where he’s not getting through the football. Some of it can be the wide receiver not setting his right angle based on the coverage that we’re seeing, so a combination of all those things – that’s where we have to continue to grow in our efficiency on the offensive side of the football. Some in the intermediate game, but also down the football field. We’ve been close on some things. We’ve got to handle those things out. That’s not atypical early in the year. We’ve just got to accelerate and hit our groove here a little quickly.”

Tennessee is set to face the Texas A&M Aggies up next on the schedule at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
