Josh Heupel reacts to Tennessee leading the SEC in key line of scrimmage stats
Josh Heupel is leading Tennessee to a couple of very impressive stats this season.
Following the dominant win over UConn over the weekend, the Vols now have the No. 1 rushing offense as well as the No. 1 rushing defense throughout the SEC, a pair of stats that Heupel says speak to the growth of the team.
“Just the growth from our program, from where we started to where we are now,” Heupel said in his press conference Monday. “It starts with personnel, having good players on the line of scrimmage. We have guys that have played a lot of football on both sides of the line of scrimmage too that have continued to get better. We’ve had an influx of some young guys that are dynamic and change the way the game’s played.”
While it starts with the line of scrimmage, Heupel believes the impressive stats are also a testament to the entire team working together towards the same goal.
“With all that being said, you talk about d-lineman and offensive lineman, the other position groups have a great affect on that too,” Heupel said. “Offensively, your tight ends, the growth of running backs, the quarterback being involved in that. And then defensively, you look at our linebackers, safeties, how they’re playing, being able to tie all 3 levels of the defense and together, that’s been a huge part of the growth of our program since we arrived.”
Tennessee is looking for a great game on the line of scrimmage on Saturday as the Vols take on Missouri. The Tigers have one of the best running backs in the league in Cody Schrader, and the Vols will have a tall task defending him.
The Vols are still in a position where they can win the SEC East, but it starts with a win over Missouri.
